Important legislation
Legal requirements for pet keepers in England.
The Microchipping of Cats & Dogs Regulation 2023*
The rules below and the £500 fine apply in England only. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own legislation and enforcement.
In England, this legislation requires pet keepers to ensure their pet's microchip details are up to date at all times.
In England, you can be fined up to £500 if your dog or cat is not microchipped, is not registered to the official keeper, or the information on the microchip is not up to date.
*It is a legal requirement to microchip cats in England. Rules for cats and dogs differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland; microchipping is still strongly recommended across the UK for reunification.
